In 1986, he was awarded by the Brazilian Society of Language and Literature, Rio de Janeiro, with the medal Oskar Nobiling of cultural merit during the XVIII Brazilian Congress of Language and Literature.
The first book, Dryness of the Green, date from the 1950s, the second, the Heart of the Compass, 1967, passing then to publish regularly.
"I had to work very hard to be a teacher," said the poet, in March of 2009, when he was honored at the 1.Th get-together of the Poetry Spring, in Vila Nova de Gaia. So there is a gap in the work, in the years 1950/60. The university had not prepared anyone to teach at that time, he said.
